Hundreds Of Maskless Partiers Gather In Prospect Park: Report - Park Slope, NY Patch

PROSPECT PARK, BROOKLYN — A massive party in Prospect Park over the weekend ignored social distancing guidelines and left park grounds already facing maintenance shortfalls covered in trash, according to reports and video.

More than 1,500 mostly-maskless partiers gathered in the park Sunday night into Monday morning as a DJ played music and fireworks burst overhead, according to the New York Post and online videos.

The gathering's tight-knit crowds ignored social distancing guidelines meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and quickly drew the ire of many on social media.

"Are these people crazy?" said one Twitter user about the party. "Covid is here to stay thanks to these idiots."

"WHY ARE HUMANS SO STUPID? Why???????????" wrote another.

Prospect Park — which is already struggling to keep park grounds clean amid budget cuts — was found covered in litter from the party the next day.

"Illegal gatherings like the one held last night in Prospect Park present significant challenges for safety and undercut our maintenance efforts — the condition of the Nethermead is totally unacceptable," a spokesperson for the Parks Department told The Post.

An organizer of the "Litnic 2020" party, which has also been held in years past, told the Post that the event was planned "to give back to the people and provide a safe place for young adults to gather and socialize." It offered free food to guests and was BYOB.

"I do feel bad about the mess left behind and I'm looking into a way to prevent that," the organizer, Kyle Rhodes, told the Post.
