Protestors flock to abortion clinics after Texas judge's ruling on S.B. 8 - The Dallas Morning News

Anti-abortion activists are protesting outside of abortions clinics across DFW on Thursday after a judge put a halt to enforcement of the Texas abortion law known as SB 8 that bans abortions at around six weeks of pregnancy.

The law, which went into effect Sept. 1, was challenged by the Biden administration which filed suit in federal district court in Austin to overturn it. It asked the court for an injunction to stop its enforcement as the case moves forward.

On Wednesday night, U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman issued an 113-page ruling granting the preliminary injunction.

The anti-abortion groups who disagree with the ruling were making their presence felt Thursday at area clinics, with some saying the Texas legislature didn’t go far enough with SB 8.

Outside Southwestern Womens Surgery Center in Dallas on Thursday, anti-abortion activists carried signs and some prayed as a form of protest.

“If our society has no justice, we have no society. And this baby has no justice because if you kill the baby outside the womb, you would have the death penalty. If you kill a baby inside the womb, this baby can’t cry out for his pain, said Sueann Gober, one of the protesters.

Since S.B. 8 was enacted, it has become a flashpoint in the national debate over abortion rights. The law allows private citizens to sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion in Texas after fetal cardiac activity is detected, which can occur around six weeks of pregnancy.

On Wednesday, some pro-choice groups applauded the judge’s decision. And some Texas clinics which had stopped performing abortions after six weeks said they would resume appointments for cases up to 18 weeks. But others, still worried about being sued if the law ultimately stands, said they would wait and see.

So it remains unclear what effect the preliminary injunction will have or how long it will be in force. Texas has already appealed the ruling to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, known as one of the nation’s most conservative courts.
