Sparkling Rosés make lively holiday libations - CapeGazette.com

As promised, since the winter holidays are rapidly approaching, the drift of the column will point you in the direction of fair-value wine that will support your holidays.

Let’s look at three sparkling Rosés for a festive opening salvo. Brilla Prosecco DOC Rosé is pale peach/pink-colored with lots of fine bubbles to lift the strawberry/floral nose. On the creamy, medium-bodied palate, look for more strawberries, some peach and lemon hints; cleansing acidity cleans up finish with fruit and floral notes, 88 McD points around $13.

Valdo is another name I look for. Marca Oro Prosecco DOC Brut Rosé is an 89-point bargain under $16. Vibrant bead and pretty pink visual leads to mixed bouquet of berries, apples and pears. A delicate fruit palate is best observed when served under 43 degrees F. Those who wish to go a bit upscale without breaking the bank and prefer white sparklers can look for 2019 Bisol Crede Brut Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, McD 93 under $23. This is from the top region for Prosecco production. All from 2014 forward are 89 or better except the 87-point 2020. I’ve seen magnums for $45 and halves under $13. Bisol C-V Superiore di Cartizze is their top of line and will run around $40. Although these also rate McD 90, I don’t think the value supports moving up. Try a bottle of each and draw your own conclusions. You have time. Those who prefer their sparklers extra dry should remember this means slightly sweeter than Brut. May wish to sample Valdo Cuvée 1926 Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Both the 2019 and 2020 rated 91 points. Can be had for $40. Wonderful with turkey and chicken, or to make a Bellini with fresh peaches. Complex bouquet of ripe apple, pear, peach with banana and pineapple accents. Medium body, balancing acidity cleans up long finish.

Longtimers will remember I am a fan of Brunello di Montalcino. The rise of the now ubiquitous Super Tuscans, which were designed to get product out of winemaker’s cellars quickly and into public consumption, has pushed the market into another direction. Super Tuscan wines include non-indigenous grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. These international grape varieties were not approved by the official DOC and DOCG classification system of Italy. Lacking credentials, they were super hyped and named Super Tuscans to emphasize their high quality. Readers may recall all the brouhaha over such as Sassicaia, L’Apparita, Ornellaia and Antinori’s Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso. The first Super Tuscan wines arose in 1968, and by the 1980s, the term had become quite popular worldwide. Nothing wrong with Super Tuscans, mind you, especially for the impatient consumer. They are Bordeaux blends grown and made in Tuscany by some of the best-known Italian estates. Those who enjoy history may look here: vinovest.co/blog/super-tuscan#link-1. Following quote is a succinct description. “Many Super Tuscans end with the suffix ‘aia.’ In the past, this easily distinguished them from the rest of the Italian wines (since they did not have their own classification or were labeled as the lower-quality Vino da Tavola.)”

Those who “invest” in wine will be happy to learn that the best-known of the names mentioned above have increased in financial value approximately 47% since November 2019. While looking at neighbors, I found a very affordable (for this type) wine, Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 2016, 96 McD for less than $120. Parker laid on a 98 and the price jumped, but it has regressed to bargain level. MATGAT Matarocchio Bolgheri Superiore 2016 got an RP 97, and all recent vintages are selling for $400-plus. I placed this idea today because every year I received requests from those wishing to buy a gift for a wino pal who has everything. If you are just looking for acquaintance, MATGAT II Bruciato can be easily found around $30. Vintages from 2015-19 rated 89-90 McD. 2020 blend of Cab/Merlot/Syrah got 93s from Parker and Suckling. I have not sampled any yet, but at about $30, I’ll roll the dice as soon as I see some.
