Cincinnati Reds' Ben Lively joins rotation mates Greene Lodolo on IL - The Cincinnati Enquirer

Another day, another starting pitching problem for the Cincinnati Reds.

Already having added smoke and mirrors to their various arrays of fastballs and sliders to cobble enough pitching to support their stunning run to the top of the National League Central, the Reds on Saturday put starting pitcher Ben Lively on the 15-day injured list because of a pectoral strain.

" I don’t think it’s going to be a long time that he’s out," manager David Bell said, noting that until a few hours before game time Saturday, the team and Lively believed his soreness was mild enough that he'd be well enough to make his next start as scheduled Sunday.

"We'll figure it out."

That's been a daily part of the lives of the Reds brass for more than a month with key rotation pitchers landing on the IL and otherwise skipping starts for maladies ranging from a stress reaction in Nick Lodolo's leg to soreness in Hunter Greene's hip and lower back to Graham Ashcraft's bruised calf.

Until Ashcraft was activated to start Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, all three of the Reds' Big Three young starting core were on the IL at the same time.

Lodolo is still in a walking boot, with his next checkup scheduled for Wednesday, the earliest he might be cleared to have the boot removed. His targeted timeline for a return is sometime in August.

The uncertainty of Greene's progress, including the series of medical tests late this week associated with a second medical opinion on his injury, could push his timeline far enough into July that a rehab assignment could become necessary -- putting his return into the August range as well.

Meanwhile, the Reds are running out of starting pitching options.

They've discussed openers and/or bullpen days, a method they employed twice last month.

Their top minor-league prospect, Connor Phillips, was expected to debut sometime later this summer, after making at least a few starts at Triple-A Louisville, which is considered especially important because of the different, pre-tacked ball in use this season in the Double-A Southern League. The Triple-A International League uses the same ball that's used in the majors.

Phillips is scheduled to start Tuesday for Double-A Chattanooga.
