Dusk falls as a lively crowd enjoys conversation, food and drink at Abbott Square Market in downtown Santa Cruz. Opened by the Museum of Art & History (MAH) in the summer of 2017, the square, which offers a food court with many food and beverage options, fills an open and airy space located in a courtyard behind the former jail, the Octagon and the new Cooperhouse, which was built in 2010. When Abbott Square Market opened, then Executive Director Nina Simon said, “We aimed to connect the inside of the museum with the outside world of downtown. We saw the potential for a creative community plaza and town square.” The iconic Octagon, which has stood at the corner of Cooper and Front streets since 1882, and is the current home of Daisuki Octagon Sushi, has served as the County Records Building, a history museum, the museum store, a coffee shop and a puppetry institute.
