Which holiday destinations could remain off-limits for longest?
If your idea of holiday heaven is simply an all-inclusive week on a beach, then you may well be in luck this summer. Armed with your vaccinations – and all the paperwork to prove it – you could be sunning yourself on Mediterranean shores, or jetting off to the Seychelles (which, like the UK, is vaccinating its citizens at full-throttle). But which places might remain off-limits to Britons for longer? There are no hard-and-fast answers of course, but based on the Government's own parameters for allowing travel, it is clear that holidays to some countries won't be permitted any time soon. If you have set your sights on any of these destinations, you would be wise to temper your expectations – in some cases, for at least another 12 months. Places with slow vaccine roll-outs In order for non-essential international travel to recommence, it is not only Britons that must be vaccinated, but other populations too, warned Transport Secretary Grant Shapps on Wednesday. “We’ll need to wait for other countries to catch up [on their vaccination programmes], in order to do that wider international [travel] unlock,” he told BBC Breakfast. Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust and a Government scientific adviser, agrees. “We [must] vaccinate as many people in this country and ensure that those vaccines are available in an equitable way around the world,” he told BBC Radio Four’s Today programme on Thursday. “That’s not just a moral and ethical case, that’s a financial and economic… and it’s the only way actually to bring this pandemic to a close globally.”
