The Dauphin Street Beer Festival used to serve as the start of downtown Mobile’s busy entertainment season, but in this COVID-skewed year you can argue that Friday night provides a kick-off, courtesy of a “spooky” art walk and a first-ever Latin Fest.
Other weekend attractions include the reopening of the Mobile Saenger Theatre and the American Cancer Society’s annual Chili Cook-Off. (Note: The Beer Fest returns on Oct. 16, an evening that also will bring a Zombie Run to downtown streets.)
Some highlights:
LoDa art walk, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday -- The Lower Dauphin Street district’s monthly art walk has at least two themes, anticipation of Halloween and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Participants absolutely are invited to “dress up in your Halloween best.” For full information, including a map of galleries, restaurants and activities, visit mobilearts.org/artwalk/ or www.facebook.com/LODAartwalk/.
Mobile Latin Fest, 5 pm.-9 p.m. Friday -- This first-ever celebration, held in Cathedral Square, celebrates Hispanic heritage and serves as a fundraiser for a Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast program that provides scholarships to local Hispanic students. Admission is free. Attractions include a parade of flags, music, dancing, food, vendors, a domino tournament, piñatas and more. www.habagc.com or www.facebook.com/events/512252576651137.
Alabama Contemporary Art Center -- In conjunction with the art walk, ACAC opens four new exhibitions on Friday. The are “Crescent Moon Paradise” by Atlanta installation artist/sculptor/activitst Zipporah Camille; “Needs More Wonder: Every Tether Has Two Ends” by Santa Fe multimedia artist Jenny Day; “Different/Fit,” a presentation on the history of eugenics in Alabama, presented in conjunction with the Mobile Medical Museum; and “Soil: Story Gathering,” a pop-up that is part of the Mobile County Community Remembrance Project. From 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, ACAC will host “Neu Dawn 2021,” curator Courtney Matthews’ annual event featuring live art installations created by 22 teams of artists and costumers. www.alabamacontemporary.org.
Mobile Saenger Theatre -- The “Jewel on Joachim” had a larger-than-usual summer shutdown as new air conditioning was installed. A busy October was to kick off Thursday with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. Comedian Nate Bargatze performs two shows on Friday, followed by a Blackberry Smoke concert on Sunday. Other upcoming shows: The Mobile Symphony Orchestra partners up with Nashville songwriters for “Music City Hitmakers” Oct. 14; Parker McCollum performs Oct. 22; Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd bring the blues on Oct. 26; and the “Scream on the Screen” movie series presents “Friday the 13th” on Oct. 29 and “Beetlejuice” on Oct. 30. www.mobilesaenger.com.
Exploreum Science Center -- There’s spooky and then there’s creepy. A special exhibition on “The Science of Phobias” explores the underpinnings of fear through Oct. 30. See www.exploreum.com for more details. Also, while it’s technically not part of this weekend, you might need to know that the Exploreum’s next 21-and-up movie night will put the cinematic classic “The Lost Boys” on its IMAX screen on Saturday, Oct. 16. It’s $10 and participants are encouraged to dress up. Bring your own wine, $5 corking fee.
Mobtown Burger Week -- The fundraiser for Restore Mobile continues through Saturday, with participating restaurants offering a variety of over-the-top burgers. For a full menu, visit www.restoremobile.org/mobtown-burger-week.
American Cancer Society Chili Cook-Off, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday -- Normally a spring event, the 32nd annual cook-off has a new fall date and a new location: Along Canal Street between Broad Street and Washington Avenue. The format remains familiar. A ticket ($10 in advance, $15 at the gate) grants you the privilege of sampling all the chili you can stand. Additional attractions include live music and children’s activities. www.mobileacschilicookoff.com. or www.facebook.com/ACSChiliCookOffMobile.
