With her long, cascading waves, impossibly glow-y complexion and always, headline-hitting make-up, you’d be forgiven for thinking Blake Lively’s daily beauty routine was all glitz and glamour. But when the Gossip Girl star is off the red carpet, her regime is actually pretty low maintenance – particularly, when it comes to skincare.
Well aware that there’s a lot more to emulating someone’s routine than the products themselves (including genetics and lifestyle), I decided to give Lively’s skin regime a whirl to see just how she gets that unrivalled glow. Here’s what I discovered along the way...
She favours skincare on off-duty days
Yes, you might be used to seeing Lively donning Versace and smokey eye make-up at the Met Gala, but her off-duty days look a little different. ‘On a day-to-day basis I just normally wear sunscreen, tinted moisturiser and nothing else really. Nothing really make-uppy,' Lively recently told Vogue.
And if you're wondering which SPF she favours, one of Lively’s favourites just so happens to be my current ride-or-die too. The SPF in question is the CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF50, a formula that has been catching the attention of just about every beauty editor and dermatologist.
The reason for my own love affair starts with the lightweight texture. Unlike so many high-factor SPFs that feel heavy on my skin, I can wear this SPF under my make-up and it's completely undetectable. Thanks to ingredients like niacinamide and barrier-boosting ceramides, it also lends my skin a glow-y looking base too.
She mixes luxury and affordable products
While you might recognise some luxury heavyweights featuring in Lively’s beauty cabinets, including the eye-watering La Mer The Eye Concentrate (which costs £195), there are also plenty of more affordable skincare heroes in her arsenal – like the Environ Cleansing Lotion.
I swapped out my current favourite cleanser (the Shiseido Cleansing Microfoam) and used this for a few weeks, morning and night. A great double action cleanser, it helped leave my skin feeling clean but never stripped and my skin felt hydrated and nourished after every cleanse.
She loves a face mist
They often get a bad rap for being a superfluous step in your skincare routine, but if Blake gives them the seal of approval, then who are we to judge? The facial mist responsible for Blake's luminous complexion is the Caudalie Beauty Elixir – incidentally the secret weapon of many a TikToker (causing it to sell out earlier this year) along with singer Madison Beer.
Kept in the fridge, it's been a salve for the particularly hot summer days recently and, enriched with rosemary essential oil and organic mint, it feels extra refreshing.
She’s a fan of facial steaming
There are plenty of high-tech facial steamers that promise to open, unclog and deeply clean your skin, but Lively reveals that she favours the more DIY route. Years back, her 'farm to face' steam gained traction, using ingredients like rosemary with steaming water to yield skincare benefits.
Trying it out for myself (boiling water into a large glass bowl, using a bath towel to cover my head and leaning over the steaming bowl) felt like quite an excessive, additional step in my skincare routine. That said, I would think about investing in a facial steamer for a deeper cleanse:
