UPDATE: With respect and pledges to persevere, 2 fallen firefighters remembered in public service (PHOTOS)
Firefighters in dress uniforms from across the region joined family and friends of two fallen comrades from Lehigh County to pay their respects Saturday.
Outside the Northwestern Lehigh Middle School building hosting the services in New Tripoli, Heidelberg Township, an expansive American flag hung suspended between two aerial trucks.
Inside the school, the flag-draped coffins of New Tripoli Fire Co. Assistant Chief Zachary Paris and firefighter Marvin Gruber occupied the stage inside the school’s auditorium.
Placards set up on easels alongside their turnout gear bore their names in a black band across New Tripoli’s insignia, with the words: “End of watch Dec. 7, 2022.”
The funeral service for Paris and Gruber is set for 2 p.m., and it can be watched here on this YouTube channel:
The two firefighters died after becoming trapped while trying to put out a house fire Dec. 7 on Clamtown Road in Schuylkill County’s West Penn Township, near Tamaqua. The blaze is being investigated as suspicious. The body of a man who lived there was found on the property with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities have told WFMZ-TV 69.
Paris and Gruber are remembered in their obituaries as dedicated fathers and public servants. Gruber also had three grandchildren.
Gruber, who was 59, worked at Northampton Community College for 22 years, the last 15 in the Department of Public Safety.
Paris lived and volunteered in New Tripoli, and he worked as a professional firefighter in Frederick County, Maryland. He was 36.
GoFundMe online fundraisers have been launched for the families of the two fallen firefighters.
