MIRAMAR, Fla. – Family and friends gathered on Sunday to remember the life of a teenager who was shot and killed five years ago.
That boy’s family is still waiting for justice as the shooter remains at large.
On Sunday, they renewed their plea for information that could lead to an arrest.
In July of 2018, Mendell Butler turned 17 years old.
Less than 24 hours later he was murdered, shot and killed outside of his home in Miramar.
“I just would like for them to do the right thing because I know they didn’t come out there with the intentions to kill my son,” Mendell’s mother Omorose Butler told Local 10 News last year.
The teen had plans to attend college and go on to be a lawyer.
In the past five years, police have not made an arrest, but Mendell’s family is hopeful.
Several mothers of children who had been murdered were in attendance on Sunday to support the Butler family and bring attention to Mendell’s unsolved murder.
Regina Talabert lost her teenage daughter to gun violence.
“Her son was murdered a couple years ago and I’m also a mother of gun-violence,” said Talabert. “My daughter was murdered as well.”
A reward of over $100,000 has been offered for tips that lead to an arrest in the case.
