Chronic pain patients will gather Wednesday outside the Weld County Courthouse to bring awareness to chronic pain issues amid the nationwide battle against the opioid epidemic.
“While attempting to rein in the abuse and misuse of illegal/illicit drugs, the federal government has implemented policy that has caused great harm to Americans in need of FDA-approved opioid pain medications,” a news release from an organizer states.
The rally is scheduled from 12-2 p.m. outside the Weld County Courthouse, 901 9th Ave., Greeley. The rally is in conjunction with the nationwide Don’t Punish Pain Rally, started by Claudia Merandi of Rhode Island. Merandi is a retired court reporter battling Crohn’s disease, according to the Don’t Punish Pain Rally website. A rally is also planned in Denver and other locations throughout the nation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain in 2016, leading many providers to stop treating chronic pain, according to the release. In June, the American Medical Association urged the CDC to make significant revisions to the 2016 guidelines.
“To make meaningful progress toward ending this epidemic, a broad-based public health approach is required,” AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James L. Madara said in a release. “We are now facing an unprecedented, multi-factorial and much more dangerous overdose and drug epidemic driven by heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and stimulants. We can no longer afford to view increasing drug-related mortality through a prescription opioid-myopic lens.”
