Plymouth church to gather in-person for first time since March - KSTP

In-person ministries were disrupted during one of the most important seasons of the church calendar, the Rev. Tim Westermeyer says.

"What I recall when we met last in March, we had just had the close all of our in-person activitves, we were going to have to stop our mid-week Lenten services, which are really important part of our community here," Westermeyer said.

More than seven months later, members of the congregation will finally be able to see each other again, face-to-face — with proper guidelines in place, of course.

Churches go virtual during coronavirus pandemic

A temperature check, a sign-in sheet and hand sanitizer will await parishioners at the door. There's also clearly marked spacing.

"While we are doing some things differently as a congregation, again the most obvious example would be our virtual worship," Westermeyer said. "We're still doing the work."

St. Philip the Deacon has even created a room for recording podcasts and livestreams, digital formats Westermeyer said the church will continue to produce when the pandemic is over.

But Westermeyer said the in-person activities are returning for now, at least in limited capacity, so that those who need support can get it again.

"What we are struggling with here on the issue of in-person worship is the competition of two goods, I will call them," he said. "On the one hand, the safety of everyone which is absolutely a priority, and remains a priority, and also ... the need for some people at least to feel connected to others, even in a short and different type of in-person service."

Several other churches told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they're paying attention to Minnesota health guidelines and are planning on staying well below capacity limits.
