Blake Lively is "beach waves" personified. The actress, 33, has been everyone's object of hair envy ever since starring in Gossip Girl (or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for you real fans). What does she have to say about her famous blonde locks? "Honestly, I am a shy person and my hair is a safety net for me, so I love to have it down and full and relaxed," she told Hello! back in 2014. If you're looking for more specifics–keep reading. She and her longtime hairstylist, Rod Ortega, have thankfully divulged some of her hair secrets over the years.
She loves Kérastase products.
She called the brand's Elixir Ultime Shampoo "divine" in a 2013 interview with Marie Claire:"I have every single one of their shampoos and rotate which one I use—it’s best if you don’t oversaturate your hair with one product." Ortega is also a fan of using Kérastase products on Lively, and mentioned to The Cut in 2018 that he uses "the serum in the really tiny blue bottle, so her hair doesn't get used to one" (sounds like the Sérum Thérapiste Hair Serum). "I won’t lie, they’re definitely on the pricier side, but think about it like skin care: It’s like spending money on pricey eye cream, or La Prairie for your face. It’s good to invest in the maintenance of your hair and I think a good serum or oil is a must," Ortega said.
She uses literal sea water.
While you might have a salt water spray on your vanity for styling, Lively goes the extra mile. "My hair is always better in California than it is in New York, so I got a big water jug and I filled it with ocean, which is probably a really bad idea, but I would put it on my hair, and actually, it worked," she told Style.com in 2014. "It’s salt and it’s water and it makes your hair a little crunchier and holds it a little better."
She also embraces DIY hair masks with kitchen ingredients.
“My mom taught me this really great beauty tip. She used to put oil or mayonnaise on the bottom half of her hair before she would shower," she told Byrdie in 2017. "That way, when she would shampoo, the soap wouldn’t strip the bottom of the hair and dry it out, making it brittle.”
She gets frequent haircuts.
One of Ortega's top tips for healthy hair is to get a cut every six to seven weeks "for dusting and shaping," as he told W in 2017. "You can go two months if you want, but three months and your hair starts to become brittle," he said. "Go in there and have your stylist do a mask and get it shaped. It’s maintenance like doing your manicure, pedicure or eyebrows."
She has the easiest hack for waves.
She told Marie Claire that her longtime colorist Rona O'Connor will "put my hair in a bun, then take it out, and it looks great." This is the same technique Ortega used on her during her press run for A Simple Favor in 2018: She pulled back her hair into a bun while wet to preserve her natural texture before styling, as Ortega told Refinery 29. Then, while halfway dry, he spritzed Christophe Robin's Instant Volumizing Mist with Rose Water, dried the rest of the hair with the T3 Cura Luxe blowdryer and its SoftCurl Diffuser attachment.
She uses a boar bristle brush for volume.
Lively is a fan of the hairstylist-approved Mason Pearson brush. "I use this for teasing. Just one or two strokes under the top layer gives my hair a sexy, full look," she told Marie Claire. PS–if you think she's got hair extensions in, you're mistaken. "That's all her hair," Ortega told The Cut in 2018. "Other stylists ask me that all the time, especially on junkets: Is that all her hair? It is. It’s actually not thick, thick, thick hair either—we pump it up."
She uses a versatile curling iron.
Ortega has frequently credited T3 tools for Lively's signature waves. As he described to Harper's Bazaar, "I sectioned the hair starting at the nape of the neck and used the T3 Whirl Convertible to create waves, pinning as I went I wave the hair the same direction around the whole head- this really gives you that classic ‘Blake wave’." Then, while curls are pinned, Ortega would set them with L'Oreal Elnett hairspray and L'Oreal Nutri-gloss Shine Mist. He'd then go through the coils with an Ibiza paddle brush "for a very effortless look."
The Whirl curler comes with multiple barrel sizes you can switch out for different styles: "I can do '20s, '80s, 2000s, that really sexy, big tight '70s curls with it," Ortega told ELLE UK in 2017. "If I had to travel with one thing, it would be my T3 Whirl Trio."
