The event, which attracted top elected officials, government and civic leaders and decision-makers from around the state, was the 35th edition of what was formerly known as the Rural Utah Summit.

“This year’s summit was very successful and provided attendees with three days of information, inspiration and leadership development,” said Stephen Lisonbee, assistant vice president at SUU and Gov. Spencer Cox’s senior adviser for rural affairs.

“The networking opportunities were extraordinary and individuals made very valuable connections that will make immediate and long-lasting impacts for rural Utah,” Lisonbee added.

The three-day event kicked off the evening of Oct. 11 with a launch party and networking dinner, accompanied by live music and a flyover by SUU Aviation. Earlier that same day, Gov. Cox joined other dignitaries and company officials for a ribbon-cutting event and open house for Align Precision Cedar City, which designs and fabricates metal parts for the aerospace industry.

The Oct. 12 schedule featured several notable speakers and presentations.

Among the highlights was the Utah Rural Legacy Leader award being presented to Larry Echo Hawk, who was recognized for his service in helping bring communities together throughout rural Utah, in partnership with Utah’s indigenous tribes. Echo Hawk and his wife Terry then joined Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson on stage for a short visit.

Taking the stage later were former NBA and BYU basketball player Shawn Bradley and his wife Carrie. They took part in a conversation with Gov. Cox and his wife Abby, talking about various topics along the theme of “Stronger Together,” including divorce, mental health and strengthening families. Bradley and his wife also briefly discussed the bicycle accident in St. George that left him paralyzed in January 2021.

“You’ve been in the public spotlight for a long time, right?” Gov. Cox said to Bradley, noting that he’d followed his basketball career from high school to college to the professional level.

“Using this platform that you have to talk about these issues will I believe save lives and change lives for the better and I want to thank you for that,” Cox added.

Other topics addressed on the main stage and/or in the ensuing breakout sessions included energy, health care, water issues, infrastructure, workforce engagement, hosting world-class events, responding to crises, building partnerships and business innovation.

Also on Oct. 12, First Lady Cox, assisted by Kirsten Rappleye, spearheaded a “Show Up” lunchtime service project. As attendees ate their lunches from various food truck vendors, many of them lined up to help put together teacher appreciation kits for Utah educators.

After lunch, eight entrepreneurs, all from Southern Utah, took part in the State Bank Business challenge, an early-stage business competition. Winning the judges’ choice award was Alan Martin for his “Audiobiography” concept, which captures and preserves people’s narratives and life stories as podcast-type recordings.

A total of $25,000 was awarded to the eight finalists, with each of them winning at least one prize. The other entrants’ products included baked sweets, exchangeable glitter eyeglass frames, a tool box that doubles as a charging station, 3D-printed deer antlers, an eyedrop-saving bottle attachment, a plant-watering device and headphones that provide an immersive storytelling experience for children.

The day wrapped up with various afternoon breakout sessions and more opportunities for networking.

“I think being able to provide opportunities for leaders throughout the state to spend time together is rare and we try to foster as much of that as possible,” Lisonbee said.

The conference concluded Thursday with Leadership Day, with featured speeches by SUU President Mindy Benson, Lt. Gov. Henderson and Olympic athlete Noelle Pikus-Pace. The theme of the day was inspiring greatness in the home, in the community and in careers.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to use the power of partnership and convening to support the One Utah approach to working together on what’s most important,” Lisonbee said.
