Ghosts and ghouls gather to bring Halloween fun - Detroit Lakes Tribune

DETROIT LAKES — The ghoulish growls and ghastly gasps of Halloween coincide with sweet treats for many people. For Becker County Museum Executive Director Becky Mitchell, she appreciates handing treats to kids dressed for the holiday and joining the effort to scare the bejesus out of people.

Mitchell is one of the about 40 volunteers that create, decorate and host the annual Haunted House at the Becker County Fairgrounds. The event is in its third year.

“We came up with a theme inspired by cinematic movies,” she said. “It will feel familiar from popular (scary) movies, but the props will not be used as expected.”

Mitchell said because of sponsors' support with hard costs, such as renting the space and insurance, they were able to purchase many new props. Then, preparation began on creating a scare-filled night for those who attend.

The tours will be given on Oct. 21-22; 27-29 from 7-9 p.m. and take about 10 minutes, on average. However, groups are able to move at their own pace, Mitchell said, and some people run, while others enjoy the decorations and actors in each scare room.

Groups are limited to five people and there is a $10 cash entry fee. Beware, the event is not intended for young children. Those younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The Haunted House is located at the Becker County Fairgrounds, 1310 Rossman Ave.

Mitchell said the haunted house fundraiser is one of the more popular events the museum hosts. She added the proceeds help fund programming at the museum, such as camps, classes and outreach.
