A group of 16 researchers have been handpicked by NASA to study unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), otherwise known as UFOs, to create a report that will be released to the public next year.

The independent study will begin Monday and is expected to continue for nine months. NASA said the team will work to lay the groundwork for future research on UAP, continuing recent efforts to better understand the source of the unexplained encounters.

The researchers, which include professors, scientists, and other professionals, will parse through unclassified data can be analyzed to shed light on UAPs before making recommendations on UAP data analysis, NASA said in a release.

“Exploring the unknown in space and the atmosphere is at the heart of who we are at NASA,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said in the release.

“Understanding the data we have surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena is critical to helping us draw scientific conclusions about what is happening in our skies,” added Zurbuchen. “Data is the language of scientists and makes the unexplainable, explainable.”

Earlier this year, Congress held a public hearing on UFOs where officials said they did not believe extraterrestrials were the source of the currently-unknown objects. The Pentagon later said it would establish an office to keep tabs on UAP reports.

The NASA report is slated to be released to the public in mid-2023.

“NASA has brought together some of the world’s leading scientists, data and artificial intelligence practitioners, aerospace safety experts, all with a specific charge, which is to tell us how to apply the full focus of science and data to UAP,” said Daniel Evans, the assistant deputy associate administrator for research at NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and the lead official responsible for orchestrating the study.

“The findings will be released to the public in conjunction with NASA’s principles of transparency, openness, and scientific integrity,” added Evans.
