TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shouting “No means no,” about 35 Topeka High School students gathered off-campus Wednesday morning to protest alleged sexual assault incidents they say were affecting classmates.
The students gathered around 7:55 a.m. Wednesday in front of the main entrance of the school at 800 S.W. 10th Ave.
Some of the students were wrapped in blankets on the 24-degree morning while others wore face paint as they made their way south across S.W. 10th Avenue.
The protest, which began at the southeast corner of S.W. 10th and Taylor, was announced in advance on social media.
Topeka High Principal Rebecca Morrisey said she met with students Tuesday and added that the school was “following up” on their concerns.
She said an alleged incident that was discussed occurred off-campus and “had nothing to do with Topeka High School.”
That incident and others that occur off-campus are investigated by the Topeka Police Department, she said.
On Wednesday morning, Morrisey again met with the student protesters before they crossed S.W. 10th and left the school campus.
Morrisey said she supported the students’ right to voice their concerns and hoped to further the discussion.
Topeka High student Aujanae McGill was one of the leaders of the protest, which occurred during class time.
McGill said students wanted to “speak up” and make their voices heard on the topic of sexual assault.
Lt. Manny Munoz of the Topeka Police Department said the department is aware of the cases and that they are under investigation.
Additional details weren’t immediately available.
