The University of Minnesota held its first Women Invested in Leadership and Learning, better known in Gopher Athletics as W.I.L.L., Monday, Sept. 28, 2020.W.I.L.L. is a partnership between the University of Minnesota, Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation, and the Schwan's Company. The mission of the programming is to empower young women through critical job competencies, customized mentoring, and transformational leadership. Student-athletes meet periodically with mentors and alumnae within the local Twin Cities business community to provide professional development.
W.I.L.L. began as a partnership between University of Minnesota Athletics and Schwan's Company in 2014 with 25 student-athletes from soccer. Since then, the professional development has grown to more than 300 student-athletes representing all Gopher women's programs (soccer, gymnastics, hockey, golf, tennis, cross country, track & field, rowing, volleyball, softball, basketball and swimming & diving).
This year, student-athletes met via Zoom for their first meeting. Programming each year begins with breakout groups for sophomores, juniors and seniors/graduate students. The topic for the sophomore group and its mentors included "Building Trusting and Caring Relationships." The large group session focused on the "I statement" of "I build trusting and caring relationships." This included an overview of relational stages and skills with a focus on empathy.
The Junior class and its mentors had a topic of "Investing in the Success of Others." The large group session focused on the importance of investing in the success of others and its impact on teamwork. The senior/graduate class and mentors had the topic of problem solving. The large group discussed the importance of problem solving when faced with a challenge.
W.I.L.L. is scheduled to meet through Zoom three additional times this semester with upcoming meetings Oct. 12, Oct. 26 and Nov. 16.
