The University of Houston has made it to the Final Four for the first time in 37 years and Cougars fans are gathering to cheer them on.
“It is amazing for the school and for the city,” said Stacy Peterson, a 34-year-old medical professional who graduated from UH in 2008. “It is fun to be around people who are just as passionate about the university.”
About 1,500 tickets were available for Saturday’s University of Houston Watch Party at downtown’s Avenida Houston, outside the George R. Brown Convention Center. Tipoff is set for 4:14 p.m.
Around 50 fans, wearing face masks and school colors of red and white, started showing up at 1:30 p.m. to watch the Cougars take on the Baylor Bears at Lucas Stadium.
Even as drops of light rain started to fall, people were still turning out.
Vik Alvarez, a UH graduate student working at the event, said the rain can’t take the joy out of the day.
“It is not every day your team is in the Final Four,” Alvarez said. “This is a reason for the whole city to come together. A little rain is not going to stop them.”
Jean Wyclifm, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from UH, was a student at the university the last time the men’s basketball was in the Final Four in 1984. While COVID-19 has made the tone more subdued, it can’t ruin the thrill.
“It’s delightful. We needed something uplifting with all that’s going on in the world,” said Jean Wyclifm. “Regardless if they go any further, this has been fun.”
UH student Jacob Izaguirre, 23, wanted to show his support for his school.
“Getting to the Final Four is something that rarely happens,” Izaguirre said. “This is historic. I had to come.”
