Memphis, Tenn. — Protestors gathered in Memphis Sunday to speak against police across the country.
There were calls to defund police, while others want to get rid of police altogether.

Amber Sherman told us she wants all police gone, “We keep us safe for one. Black people have been keeping each other safe since slavery. That’s not a new skill or a new thing. We have kept each other safe in our communities for years.”
Protestor Cherisse Scott doesn’t want to eliminate police but said there needs to be better communication.
Scott believes police are needed but how they do their job needs to change, as does how the community sees police. she says an honest, continuing dialogue must continue.
Scott told us, “I think all of us have a responsibility to bring our honest concerns to the conversation. I think that it is only in that conversation that we understand one another.”

David Collins, a retired Shelby County deputy and Fox 13 law enforcement analyst, said the alternatives to police are not ones we’d want.
Collins asked, “Is it going to be militias, self-policing, vigilantism?”
He said most police officers and departments are to open to reforms and changing how they approach some duties.
Collins suggested departments, “Load them up with a bunch of police warnings or misdemeanor citations in lieu of arrest. I think pursuit policies need to change, both foot and vehicle. Remove that arrest dynamic. If you know who that person is, you can always arrest them on another day and another time.”
Collins says departments also need to consider how they recruit and monitor officers once they’re on the streets.
A thing police and some protestors seem to agree is we need to hold police accountable, but also hold ourselves accountable for interactions with police and to fully embrace the mentality of “It takes a village” when it comes to our children.
