Representatives from local environmental and social justice organizations will gather on the steps of the state Capitol today to promote their vision of a uniquely Southern Green New Deal.
The groups are calling their movement Gulf South for a Green New Deal, and it’s a grassroots-led effort that seeks to simultaneously confront climate change, create family-sustaining jobs, and advance equity and justice.
A spokesperson with the group says the intent behind the effort at this point is not to support or oppose specific bills during the upcoming legislative session. Rather, the purpose is to raise awareness and build a movement.
Gulf South for a Green New Deal comprises more than 200 organizations across the region all focused on the interrelated crises of changing climate, the eroding coast, an inequitable economy and a divided political system.
Organizers of the movement say it’s especially important for the Gulf South to be engaged in shaping policy because it is so vulnerable to the effects of climate change and coastal erosion.
“I think a lot of times the South, especially, feels left behind in the policy arena and that we don’t have a say and the Gulf South is uniquely vulnerable to climate change,” says Michael Esealuka, a spokesperson for the movement, who is also with the environmental group Healthy Gulf.org. “We saw that with Hurricanes Delta and Laura last year, so it’s important that we’re engaged in being part of the solution.”
Though the movement comprises organizations from throughout the South, Esealuka says it originated in Louisiana in 2019 with the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy.
The movement plans to promote specific policies through a regional action campaign, strategic communications and grassroots organizing.
The announcement at the state Capitol is scheduled for 11 a.m.
