According to police, one of the men fled in a vehicle while the other left his parked vehicle and fled into nearby bushes. Police say officers saw a firearm in plain view within the man’s vehicle and ammunition on the ground near the vehicle.

Police say the man, Edwin W. Lively, eventually emerged from the bushes and the officers arrested him without incident.

A search warrant on the vehicle turned up a stolen firearm, ammunition and methamphetamine, police said.

Lively was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, illegally carrying a firearm and ammunition, first-degree theft of a firearm and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug. His bail was set at $96,000.

Lively made his initial appearance Monday in Hilo District Court. His court-appointed attorney, Jennifer Wharton, asked Judge Bruce Larson to free Lively on court-supervised release without bail, with Deputy Prosecutor Kevin Soong objecting.

Larson maintained Lively’s bail and ordered him to return for a preliminary hearing at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
