Family and friends gathered Tuesday at the White Sands Beach in South Seaside Park for a candlelight memorial honoring Keith Pinto, the 19-year-old lifeguard who was fatally struck by lightning while on-duty at the beach.

Pinto, a Class of 2020 graduate of Toms River High School North, was remembered as happy and outgoing.

“Hearing and reading from those who knew Keith best remind us that he was—and will forever remain—an integral part of the High School North community, someone who was a true source of joy and who lifted the spirits of everyone around him,” the Toms River high school said in a statement.

Loved ones have gathered at the beach where Pinto was struck since the accident Monday night, leaving flowers, lifeguard t-shirts and a Bible.

“He was just a good, good soul, who would never hurt anybody,” his aunt, Rose Sautelo, said.

Keith’s twin brother, Kevin, also worked at the beach, according to another aunt, Anabela Pinto. Their older brother, Tyler, was a South Seaside lifeguard and became a police officer in Toms River.

Those who didn’t know Keith also stopped to pay their respects and honor his service.

A handwritten note was left near the lifeguard stand.

“We were at the beach today and are grateful for what you’ve done for us by keeping us safe at the beach,” the note said. “We are so sorry for your loss.”
