Half Brothers offers lively ambience partnered with good brews - Grand Forks Herald

kuangkunang.blogspot.com

People meet people. Regular customers drop by. Children come with parents or adults.

There are picnic tables outside -- way out in back of the main gathering area. To get there, you pass by the brewing area that once was a coffee shop bakery.

Along with his crew, Chad Gunderson has created a busy center along North Third Street. He is the main owner among 10 who have interest in Half Brothers.

The menu for sandwiches and wraps is unique. Like none other you find on traditional listings. There is, for instance, a toasted chicken bacon ranch for $10.75. There’s a turkey and apple sandwich. The patty melt at $13.75 has two house-made patties topped with gouda cheese and onions.

Some customers like to build their own from a list of 20 ingredients.

And then, there are sweets. An 8-ounce giant, house-made chocolate chip and sea salt cookie can be baked to order for $8. And if that isn’t enough, a scoop of ice cream is added for an additional $2. Then there are mini dough balls for $8. They are baked and rolled in cinnamon and sugar and served with white frosting.

While the brew is the main draw at Half Brothers, the food brings customers in for sociable gatherings. The place has three restrooms – one with a diaper-changing table for infants.

With Susie Shaft (SS), I sat at the counter on a recent visit. There, we had the help of Dallas Aaker, a friendly bartender. The tables – spaced for safety during coronovirus regulations – were filling up before 6 p.m.

All of the sandwiches and sweets served at Half Brothers are prepared from scratch in full view. Sitting at the bar on a busy evening brings on a friendly feeling of sitting in someone’s kitchen. You see the workers prepare and bake orders. Somehow, even when busy, the ambience seems friendly and not hassled.

Our server, Dallas, was pleasant and helpful. From him, we were able to buy a couple loaves of homemade bread.

With SS, I enjoyed watching the crew prepare and bake orders. The seats along the counter make you feel as though you are in a friendly kitchen. Chit chatting and watching the orders prepared.
