BRADENTON, Fla. – Tough times call for tough conversations.

To get the conversation ball rolling, basketball coach David Gaulman virtually gathered a few of his coaching friends.

"It was something that I thought about doing for a while," Gaulman said.

What You Need To Know

  • St. Stephen's girls basketball coach David Gaulman invited coaches to virtual talk

  • Gaulman hopes this is the first of the coaches roundtable and would like to expand it

The coronavirus and civil discord sped up his plans.

With a pandemic still hovering over our heads and civil unrest unfolding in the streets, Gaulman set up the coaches roundtable in an effort to help each other, but more importantly, help their players.

It’s more than wins and losses for these coaches. Gaulman led his Saints Stephens team to the Final Four for the first time in school history this past season. He knows his team doesn’t win without strong communication, which helps when the conversation turns to a difficult subject like race relations.

"The number one step is to just have the conversation and then from there understand that there are so many different people that have to have so many different conversations," Gaulman said.

All of the coaches agreed that keeping the lines of communication open for their players is key. For many athletes, coaches are the biggest mentors in their lives and therefore, more willing to discuss the difficult topics with them.

"That communication now is more key than it’s ever been before," he said. "So we as coaches can’t just be about communication, we have to start that process."

And that’s what Gaulman did. With the simple click of a keyboard and an invitation to talk. The diverse nature of the roundtable was by design. It’s all about hearing different perspectives and finding common ground. It’s a lesson Gaulman thinks more people need to learn.

"If we a humble ourselves and know that there’s always something that we can learn," Gaulman said. "We can always get better. In our country right now, sometimes we need to just shut up and just listen."
