With an open roster spot and a surprising surplus of salary cap space, the Washington Mystics have signed Alaina Coates and Shey Peddy, the team announced on Monday.
Both have gone through their own trials and tribulations to end up on a 2020 roster. Being on a team during an unprecedented season could give them an opportunity to revitalize their careers.
Coates, a 6-foot-4 center, was drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. Originally, that pick was owned by Washington but traded in a part of the deal that sent Elena Delle Donne to the Mystics.
Before Coates' rookie season even began, it was shortened following ankle surgery. She would end up missing the entire 2017 campaign.
When she returned her play was never the same as projected from the South Carolina prospect. In college, she earned All-SEC honors all four seasons with the Gamecocks and grabbed 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Her first season in the W, she never got off the bench and averaged 3.4 points in 11 minutes a game.
Coates was traded to the Lynx before the 2019 season. She was eventually waived and scooped up by the Dream during the middle of the season.
Peddy, who officially played her rookie season at age 30 last year, is re-signed after a brief time on the roster last season. She appeared in 15 games to fill-in for Emma Meesseman and Kim Mestdagh who was played with the Belgian National Team. When Meesseman and Mestdagh returned, Peddy stayed with the team as a video and analytics assistant.
Prior to her breakthrough opportunity in 2019, Peddy had been cut from a WNBA training camp three times, according to the Washington Post.
The two will get a chance to make their next roster, beyond the 2020 season based on how they perform in Bradenton, Fla with the WNBA starting their new season.
Coates and Peddy are signed after Natasha Cloud and LaToya Sanders opted-out for the season. Coates will fill-in as a back-up center, the spot Sanders would have occupied. Additionally, the team signed G/F Essence Carson last week to help fill out the roster.
As of this writing, the Mystics have a maximum of 12 players on their roster.
