Zuru toys co-founder Nick Mowbray is “grateful” to his friend Blake Lively for recognising his donation of nappies, toys and masks to the US Covid-19 relief effort.

On Instagram Stories, the Gossip Girl star said she had called Mowbray in May when the pandemic had lead to “low stock on basic needs”.

Within a few days, she said, Mowbray had arranged to have over 265,000 nappies from Kiwi brand Rascal & Friends, which Zuru distributes internationally, sent to nappy banks and hospitals in New York and Texas.

Lively said Zuru had also donated over 20,000 toys to children who were in hospital but unable to have visitors due to the pandemic, and had sent tens of thousands of face masks and “I don't even know how much hand sanitiser” to hospitals in New York, “in a time when both were impossible to come by.”

“These actions were heroic,” Lively wrote. “This effort spanned three continents. And took countless people’s work.”

She stamped her posts with the line “This is not an ad” and said she was “reflecting on what I’m grateful for.”

“Tonight, reflecting on this silent act of care and community, I felt incredibly grateful. And had to share."

Mowbray said he had "no idea Blake was going to post this” but was “grateful for her lovely words.”

Mowbray described Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds as “amazing people”.

He had been friends with Lively and Reynolds for about a year and said they were “amazing people, both as entrepreneurs and as philanthropists”.

He said Rascal & Friends was Lively’s favourite nappy brand.

Mowbray credited the Zuru team for the donations, saying they had “worked day and night to make this happen across differnet countries and time zones”.

Zuru had a team in the US and felt it was important to support the relief effort in any way they could.

“A celebrity mention is always nice to receive, but truthfully, the comments that we receive from Kiwis and our customers overseas in emails or DMs are just as meaningful,” Mowbray said.

“Our team works on community projects just as hard as they work on our brands, so it’s great to see them get some recognition.”

Mowbray founded Zuru in 2003 with his brother, Mat. They were later joined by sister Anna.

What started out as a schoolboy side-gig making hot air balloons from their parents’ dairy farm has turned into a global business worth hundreds of millions of dollars that propelled the Mowbrays to the fifth spot on this year’s rich list, with a net worth of about $3 billion.

Zuru’s breakout hit was the Robo Fish and it is also behind Bunch o’ Balloons, Sparkle Girlz and Rainbocorns.
