MEDINA, Ohio – To every thing there is a season.
On May 25 of this year -- Memorial Day -- local Boy Scout troops placed more than 300 small American flags on the graves of veterans buried at Old Town and Spring Grove cemeteries in Medina.
Those flags proudly proclaimed the final resting place of veterans from all branches of the service and from all wars. The flags fluttered through the summer breezes and up to Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
As is customary, on the day after Veterans Day, the flags were removed by a group of volunteers gathered by Paul Wood, a member of the board of trustees of the Friends of the Cemetery.
Wood recruited a total of 16 volunteers from the Medina County Historical Society, the Founders' Way North neighborhood group and the Friends of the Cemetery.
On the brisk, sunny day, the group spread out across the cemetery and in 30 minutes' time had gathered all of the flags.
Many of the flags were in bronze holders stating the war in which the soldier fought. Soldiers from Medina who were buried here fought in all American wars, from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, as well as World War I, World War II and the Korean, Vietnam and the Gulf wars. Other veterans proudly served the country in times of peace.
Local historians from the Friends group and the historical society have been searching genealogies and historical accounts to try to identify and acknowledge all local veterans. Once a soldier has been identified, the American Legion supplies the bronze marker, then purchases the flags each year.
Once the flags were gathered, they were removed from the sticks holding them and taken to the American Legion Hall for respectful disposal. The weathered wooden sticks were discarded and will be replaced next spring.
