A little more than 10 people gathered Monday, Nov. 2, on the Thomson Road overpass on Interstate 35 in a last effort to show enthusiasm and support for President Donald Trump on the eve of the 2020 election, while about a mile north, supporters of former Vice President Joe Biden did the same.
There was a cacophony of sound as cars honked their horns — including one that played the Southern standard “Dixie” — to show their support in the waning moments of a contentious election. A boombox played country music and patriotic songs as the cars passed beneath the spectacle.
"This is just an energetic festivity and display of Trump enthusiasm,” one woman said. “We’re just one little slice of the pie and they create the whole picture of support.”
The woman, who declined to give her name out of fear of retaliation by “radicals,” said similar demonstrations of support with “thousands” of supporters were going on across Minnesota Monday night. She said Trump supporters were gathering on the Highway 33 overpass in Cloquet, as well as in Duluth and Two Harbors.
Others at the demonstration, who also declined to be named, said they were confident of a Trump victory at the polls on Election Day.
About a mile north of the Thomson Road overpass, a similarly sized group of Biden supporters gathered on the Jay Cooke Road overpass in a display of enthusiasm for their preferred candidate.
Carlton County DFL Chair Patty Murto said people in the county have held similar rallies on Highway 33 in Cloquet for the last month and they recently expanded to overpasses throughout the county. Demonstrations have taken place at the Thomson Road and Highway 33 overpasses as well as on 14th Street in Cloquet near Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Because of her health, Murto has stayed away from gatherings during the pandemic, but said the small rallies are a different way to encourage people to vote and show their enthusiasm.
“These are people who are excited and wanted to find a way that they could express themselves that didn't involve door knocking or phone calling,” Murto said. “So that was the way they chose to show their support for our candidates ... They’re just a reminder that there's support for Biden here, the same as for Trump. But the Trump people are much louder — not any more dedicated, but much louder.”
Unlike those at the Trump event, Murto said she was “way nervous” about the results of the election after all the money spent and attention paid to Minnesota this fall.
