MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KTTC) -- A couple hundred people gathered Monday evening as the first day of the Derek Chauvin trial wrapped up.
Protesters filled South 3rd Avenue near the 5th Street intersection. Speakers shared thoughts on the trial and what they hope the outcome will be. Leaders shouted "say his name" while the rest shouted back "George Floyd."
They also shouted "say her name" and responded with "Breonna Taylor."
Many demonstrators wore shirts displaying George Floyd's face. Black Lives Matter flags and memorabilia were also sold at the event.
The City of Minneapolis had a safety crew on standby to make sure everything remained peaceful.
Earlier in the day, demonstrators blocked traffic along some streets surrounding the Hennepin County Government Center.
"Why are you causing a disturbance?" one woman asked as she hopped out of her car to confront some of the demonstrators.
At one point, a man was lying in the street.
"We are out here. We are tired of police killing people, man," he said.
"I came here to stand in solidarity with the Floyd family. The video has been seen all over the world. We are fighting to get justice for George Floyd and his family," Carolyn Ruff of Chicago said.
Many we spoke with Monday said they planned on being near the courthouse every day of the trial. The trial is expected to last four weeks.
"I've been out here the last two weeks since jury selection started. Every day they are in court, I will be down here demanding justice," Minneapolis resident Rhea Smykalski said.
Despite the few folks who blocked off parts of some streets, it was a mostly quiet day in Minnesota's biggest city. A majority of those around the courthouse were either law enforcement or media members.
