MADISON, Wis. — In response to the spa shootings in Atlanta, hundreds of people gathered Thursday night in downtown Madison for a march for Asian American lives.
Organized by UW Madison’s BIPOC Coalition, the group said people of Asian descent are typically looked over.
“It’s something that’s been an obstacle and barrier for this community and they rarely get the platform and the space that they need to put on demonstrations like this in the first place,” said organizer Basal Jones.
With Asian American hate crimes on the rise since the start of the pandemic, Tuesday’s shootings brought it to the forefront of a national discussion.
“I think that what happened with the shooting was kind of a tipping point in the way of people paying attention to the issues Asian Americans have been facing for the past year,” said organizer Tarah Stangler.
