Sunday’s baseball finale at Santa Ana Star Field was mercifully short and, for the home team, sweet.

Just hours after completing a marathon doubleheader with Nevada that ended in a less-than-satisfying split, the University of New Mexico earned a series victory with an efficient 5-1 victory.

Tristin Lively pitched six strong innings, the Lobos’ offense broke loose in a five-run fifth, and UNM’s bullpen finished the job.

The win kept UNM (8-11, 6-6) in the thick of a muddled Mountain West race. As of Sunday, the Lobos were tied with UNLV for second place and scheduled to visit first-place San Diego State next weekend.

“The Mountain West is wide open,” UNM left fielder Kyler Castillo said, “but we needed to win this series 100%. We’ve changed our mindset lately and we’re just trying to focus on winning series and trying to build some momentum. This is a good start.”

Castillo provided the biggest hit of Sunday’s contest, a three-run double off the left-center field fence that gave UNM a 4-1 lead. Castillo then scored on a Kyle Landers triple, giving UNM’s pitching staff a working margin.

“Sometimes one big inning is all you need,” said Castillo, who finished 3-for-6 with two doubles. “That gave us some energy and seemed to get everyone fired up.”

Lively, meanwhile, was dominant after allowing a run in a shaky first inning. The right-hander allowed a walk, hit a batter and surrendered an RBI single to Landon Wallace before finding his rhythm.

Lively (2-1) allowed just one more hit over six innings, striking out six and putting to bed any memories of a poor recent outing at Kansas State where he did not make it out of the opening inning.

“Yeah, Lively had his one bad game but he’s been good throughout the year,” Castillo said. “He pretty much shoved it today.”

UNM trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth against Nevada starter Owen Sharts. Lance Russell’s RBI single tied the game and seemed to open the floodgates for the Lobos. Adam Schneider followed with a bunt single, Mack Chambers was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Castillo’s shot off the fence cleared them.

Riley Egloff and Terrell Hudson combined to pitch the final three innings for the Lobos, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. Russell finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for UNM, which improved to 5-1 at home. Dario Gomez collected two of Nevada’s three hits.

Sunday’s series finale required 2 hours and 43 minutes to complete. Each game of Saturday’s doubleheader lasted more than 4 hours.
