Talk about an absolute thirst-quencher, especially for those of us who are deprived of on-stage performances! To have it topped with the last-minute addition of Silk Sonic (that’s Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak R&B supergroup) is just icing on the cake. This year’s Grammy Awards is conducted by none other than award-winning comedian and host extraordinaire, Trevor Noah.
Performing from South Korea, BTS made history with the first nomination for a K-pop act, and worldwide fans were extremely excited to see their favourite septet take the Grammy’s stage.
Perhaps the most groundbreaking moment was when Beyoncé surpassed Alison Krauss to be the most decorated female artist, with 28 awards for her work in the industry. Two of the night’s wins for Beyoncé were for her feature in the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, “Savage”. Megan Thee Stallion, star of the song, won the Best New Artist category and sealed it off with a showstopping gold-tinted medley of “Body”, “Savage” and “WAP”.
Clad in a bejewelled Versace getup, Dua Lipa collected her award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Future Nostalgia, her second studio album. This category was studded with titanic household names, specifically Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift.
However, everyone in that category brought home an award. Justin Bieber won in (surprisingly) the Best Country Group Performance for his collaboration with Dan + Shay for “10,000 Hours”. As a duo, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande secured their Grammys this year from their musical concoction “Rain on Me”. Bagging his first-ever Grammy, Harry Styles came out on top in the Best Pop Solo Performance category.
Despite being called out by The Weeknd for alleged internal corruption, the award show gave space to multiple black artists to perform their art. Lil Baby’s explosive piece “The Bigger Picture”—nominated for Best Rap Performance—included a fiery speech by activist Tamika Mallory calling out the country’s political institution.
In a similar vein, the Recording Academy bestowed H.E.R.’s “I Can’t Breathe” with one of the most highly sought titles: Song of the Year. The song centres around police brutality and Black pain following George Floyd’s death. Accepting the award, the 23-year-old said, “I want to thank God for giving me the gift of the voice and a pen and for using me as a vessel to create change.”
Taylor Swift’s surprise album took a dive into mellow ballads and consequently broke 17 records. With the massive achievements that the songstress have accomplished through folklore, it’s only to be expected when they announced it Album of the Year. Ever the genre-bender, this star has won Album of the Year through her country-pop Fearless and synth-pop 1989.
Record of the Year went to Billie Eilish’s “everything i wanted”, which she bashfully accepted while singing praises for Megan Thee Stallion. This win marks Eilish and brother FINNEAS’s second consecutive Record of the Year accolade.
