HADLYME — During a May 15 celebration of the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry’s 252-year legacy of service on the Connecticut River, John Marshall, master captain of the Selden III ferry boat, cut a ribbon before welcoming new passengers aboard.
Among the three dozen park supporters, visitors and ferry staff who attended the event at the Hadlyme landing of the ferry route were John “Jack” Hine, supervisor of Gillette Castle State Park; and state Reps. Devin Carney, R-Old Saybrook; and Christine A. Palm, D-Chester.
The Friends of Gillette Castle State Park sponsored the event and refreshments were donated by Hadlyme Country Market.
“The ferry means so much to the people in the whole region,” Carney said in a prepared statement. “It seems every year it’s potentially on the chopping block, and we’ve always fought against that. I’m glad to see the ferry running on a normal schedule this year, and hopefully everyone will take advantage of that to see the natural beauty of the Connecticut River.”
Palm thanked those assembled for their dedication in supporting the ferry’s operation as well as the park itself. “It’s a huge connection with our friends east of the river and the tourism we depend on,” she said in the release. “We have to make sure it’s a priority.”
“To approach the Castle from a ferry ride is the most spectacular way to start a tour of the park,” Hine said. “I highly recommend it, because the view is awe-inspiring on such a beautiful day.”
About two-thirds of those attending boarded the ferry for a round trip to the Chester landing, offering views of the river and Gillette Castle atop Seventh Sister Hill.
The group took the opportunity to view recent improvements to the Hadlyme landing, including new benches and fencing, a newly leveled parking area and a historic display describing the river and its cleanup, undertaken by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation.
The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, which began its 2021 operations April 1, began service in 1769 as Warner’s Ferry, and is one of the oldest continuously operating ferries in the United States. The ferry is expected to operate through Nov. 30.
