ILLINOIS — Few things bring residents together in a community quite like a farmers market. As spring will soon turn into summer, many have opened and will continue to operate on a weekly basis through the fall.
People gravitate to them for any number of reasons. Maybe they're looking for some fresh produce and meats for a planned family barbecue later that day. Supporting a local farm or business might be why someone is spending their morning or afternoon there. It could also be they want to walk and talk with friends over a hot cup of coffee while checking out what's for sale.
As Illinois continues to open up with fewer coronavirus-related restrictions, farmers market will again be a popular option for those looking for something to do. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the pandemic brought new challenges to food security and that having access to healthy food options "are an important part of overall physical and mental health" during this time.
The CDC states that outdoor farmers markets are a "lower risk shopping option" that benefits both shoppers and the community. Guidelines include mask-wearing, social distancing, and maintaining good hygiene.
