The Town became a trending topic on Twitter after the Boston Celtics’ Game 6 victory over the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals of the 2023 NBA Playoffs. Head coach Joe Mazzulla recently admitted that he watches The Town four times a week. One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Blake Lively and Ben Affleck’s characters have s*x, which the actress describes as an awkward moment to shoot.
The synopsis of their crime drama reads “A proficient group of thieves rob a bank and hold Claire, the assistant manager, hostage. Things begin to get complicated when one of the crew members falls in love with Claire”.
Blake Lively admits “acting confident” is the key
In an early interview with US Magazine, Ben Affleck commented on his co-actor’s performance in the movie. According to him, Blake Lively was “very poised and comfortable about it – more mature than some of the crew members,”. To this, Lively had the perfect explanation. She said,
“Well, I have a big family and no one ever treated me like a child.They always treated me like an adult, like an equal. But with acting, I think half of it is just acting confident. We stand on these red carpets and pose in these dresses, but we’re all only so confident. It doesn’t mean we think we’re great looking or anything. It’s all a facade. But the sex scene was really awkward. It was my first day, so thank you for that.I guess it was good to break the ice,”
The film’s emotionally charged atmosphere is created by Lively and Affleck’s compelling performances, giving the sex scene a justification in the narrative.
The Town saw a big success at the time of its release
The Town is Affleck’s second studio movie under his direction. He was hired for the film, a reimagining of the Chuck Hogan book Prince of Thieves. He took things seriously and conducted extensive research into the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown, motivated by his Irish heritage. His efforts were well rewarded when the movie won the National Film Review awards that year for being among their top 10 movies and having the greatest ensemble cast performance. In addition, there have been no fewer than 21 other nominations.
Even though Lively played a smaller supporting part in The Town, she still put up a fantastic performance that deserves commendation. If anything, it demonstrates how successful she has been in her other works.
