Some businesses are working independently, and others have teamed up to raise money to be donated to the Cody Holte Memorial Fund, at First State Bank on 32nd Avenue South. Holte was killed in a shootout on May 27.
Pete’s Za co-owner Bob Twedt said he will be donating 100% of the day’s sales from Tuesday, June 9, to the memorial fund. The shop made an announcement on its social media page, and orders have started rolling in.
“It’s a tragic loss for his family, and everything needs to get paid back at some point,” Twedt said. “I think it’s going to be a big day.”
Michelle Hajicek, owner of Darcy’s Cafe, told the Herald she teamed up with five other businesses to make and sell T-shirts and caps, as part of the fundraising efforts. The T-shirt sales stopped on Saturday, and, in a Friday phone call with the Herald, Hajicek estimated that nearly 600 had been sold at $20 each.
“It's been unbelievable, really,” said Michelle Hajicek, owner of Darcy’s Cafe. “Every time I talk about it I want to tear up.”
Though the T-shirts were available at other locations, Darcy’s Cafe wound up being the de facto hub for people to stop by and either order or purchase one. Hajicek said her cafe has gained a large number of social media followers during the pandemic that shut down dining establishments across the state. Hacijek told a partner in the project she knew T-shirt orders would come quickly once she made the announcement they were for sale.
“I said the minute I share it it's going to take off, and, sure enough, I didn't even have it up for five minutes and I had 25 orders,” Hajicek said.
Darcy’s Cafe teamed up with Up North Pizza, River Cities Speedway, S and S Transport, Signature Graphix and Apparel and Fitness Doc Inc. for the donation project.
Bully Brew Coffee announced on social media it had received $880 in donations from customers, which the coffee shop kicked up to $1,000 to be donated in support of Holte’s family.
