An estimated 500 or so people gathered a 5 p.m. in Manteo today for roughly an hour-long peaceful demonstration devoted to the memories of those who lost their lives to police violence in 2020. The event took place against the backdrop of widespread, even global, demonstrations calling for social justice in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis.
The memorial, which was organized by the Dare County Minority Coalition, was monitored by a significant police presence, but law enforcement personnel were clearly there to support the multi-racial crowd that had gathered. Indeed, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie and Manteo Police Chief Vance Haskett were among those who delivered speeches at the event.
Despite what some organizers described as violent threats made on social media, the day went off without a hitch or a hint of trouble. And the mood of the participants — who ranged in age from kids to grandparents — was a combination of both somber and joyous, with an underlying sense that with persistence, progress can be made. And in a sign of the times, most people were wearing face coverings.
