DULUTH, MN--Dozens of protesters gathered peacefully outside Duluth's City Hall Saturday afternoon.
"Im really excited to be here to supporting people of color," said Anja Hogan as she held a hand painted portrait of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Starting around 3:30 p.m. protesters of all ages were supporting the black lives matter movement and protesting against police brutality.
They are also asking for justice for George Floyd, a black man who was killed while in Minneapolis police custody. And Taylor, an black women killed when Louisville, Kentucky police entered her home on a search warrant.
“Both are sad tragedies, lives taken too young. Both are people we should be thinking about,” said Hogan.
Both of their deaths have caused protests and riots across the nation, calling for changes when it comes to racial inequality.
"I think its important to show people we care. We're not just going to forget about this in another two weeks," said Hogan.
Protesters are calling out local leaders to cut police funding and allocating budgets elsewhere.
Kristine Osbakken said,“It's way beyond time we did this. Seattle is doing it, Minneapolis is doing it, it’s being talked about throughout the country, and Duluth needs to jump in and do right.”
Speaking out saying posting on social media isn't enough to make a change.
Protester Lili Ihrig said, "I do believe each individual can make a difference, especially when we come together, so I want to do my part."
Ihrig adds that continuing to protest will help make change across the country and in the Twin Ports.
"It contributes to a bigger cause and a bigger change," she said. "The more people you can get to come out and do stuff like this really shows that people actually do care."
Protesters dispersed roughly after 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
DULUTH, MN-- Our KBJR 6 reporter at the scene of a peaceful protest near City Hall says protesters are beginning to disperse as of Saturday at 6:20 p.m.
People initially started gathering near City Hall Saturday around 3:30 p.m. to protest racial injustice.
Initially, dozens of people were present at the protest. Our reporter on-scene says under 10 people remain.
"We will be marching on targets that are invested in the for-profit prison industry(that our city also invests in); that perpetuate a corrupt justice system and the continued murder of people of color throughout Amerikkka like US Bank and others," according to details from the protest's Facebook event page.
This comes after peaceful protests turned to unrest in Duluth back on May 30.
Since then, there have been numerous protests at the Clayton Jackson Mcghie Memorial in Duluth, as well as on the Iron Range and Superior.
A spokesperson with the Duluth Police Department said, "we’re tracking today’s protest and we expect it to be peaceful – we’re here to respond should the need arise."
KBJR 6 reached out to City of Duluth officials for comment. As of the publication of this article, we have not received a statement.
