If you’re planning to celebrate Christmas by gathering with your extended family, it’s time to start quarantining, Gov. Jared Polis said Tuesday.
It’s safest to celebrate virtually or to plan “Christmas in July” parties after more people have received the new COVID-19 vaccines, Polis said.
Last week, the state classified houses of worship as essential services. They’re exempt from capacity limits, but still have to require masks and keep six feet between groups from different households. Polis urged those who plan to attend Christmas services to consider participating online, especially if they are older or have chronic health conditions.
Colorado hasn’t seen a spike in COVID-19 infections linked to Thanksgiving celebrations, unlike some states. It’s not clear to what extent individual decisions, like staying home or quarantining, limited the spread. Much of the state closed indoor dining and restricted capacity at businesses like gyms in mid-November.
It’s also not yet clear if new coronavirus infections are on a steady downward trajectory or are plateauing after the fall spike, Polis said. The state reported fewer hospitalizations and new cases last week, but they remain well above October levels. Virus-related deaths, however, have risen dramatically in recent weeks.
“It’s still too soon to say, again, whether it’s a leveling off or a decrease,” he said.
