Even without a global pandemic, the holidays are a stressful time. New data suggests that the 2020 holiday season will see higher levels of stress, with 68 percent of U.S. respondents saying they are either “somewhat” or “very” nervous about social gatherings this holiday season.

Conducted in November by Cinch Home Services, a survey polling 1,040 people found that despite public health messaging, 60.1 percent of respondents still intend to attend a holiday gathering this year, all while COVID-19 spreads rapidly across the country.

Only 26.1 percent reported that they won’t be socializing at all over the holidays.

This attitude toward gathering for celebrations was seen over Thanksgiving, when millions of travelers continued through airport checkpoints despite warnings from public health experts on the dangers of transmitting the virus amid cold weather and tight, enclosed spaces.

Now, new COVID-19 infections are rising by at least 18 percent over the past two weeks.

Some 50.7 percent of respondents said they would gather for Thanksgiving, and an even higher 60.9 percent said they plan on gathering for Christmas.

Despite the higher volumes of people seemingly planning on attending holiday festivities, 40.3 percent said they had argued with their family or friends about public health precautions over the holidays.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has given people a lot of things to be concerned about, especially when it comes to socializing. Varying opinions on appropriate precautions to take and anxiety around infection have made gathering together a lot more tense than it used to be,” the report authors note. “However, a majority of people said they still intended to see loved ones, particularly as the holidays draw near. Plus, many people reported taking a variety of precautions and agreed on the appropriateness of rules like social distancing and keeping gatherings outdoors when possible.”
