So the Park Foundation is all about making sure that these places are preserved for future generations and then we connect people from all over America for the wonder of these places. So the National Park Foundation is not the National Park Service. It's a great question patty, the National Park Foundation's role is to bring donations from hundreds of thousands of americans from all over the country to support the park Service and make the parks even better for all of us to enjoy. You want ah ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, Good evening, I'm grateful to join you on the ancestral homelands of the anna costin and piscataway people for the 99th lighting of the national christmas tree 1923. A letter from students to the White House inspired the first tree lighting today. Hundreds of students including for the first time students from the Department of Defense Education activity and Bureau of indian education schools share their creativity through the ornaments that adorn the trees around us because this is a national park. Anyone who visits our nation's capital can enjoy their artistic talents. It's a beautiful reminder that public lands are places that bring us together. My heartfelt thanks to Interior department employees who helped plan this holiday tradition. I also extend my gratitude to our first responders and frontline workers. It's an honor to be with so many of you this evening. Your dedication to the well being of others embodies the holiday spirit, whatever your family's traditions. I wish everyone a happy holiday season. I now have the great privilege of introducing President joe biden and First Lady Jill biden. Mhm. Right. Mhm. Well, my name is joe biden. I'm Jill Biden's husband on behalf of Jill and come on doug welcome to the national christmas tree lighting. Thanks to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for that introduction and her leadership. She has made me look awful good in my judgments and it's wonderful to join you here on your birthday madam Secretary, Happy birthday Yeah. And also thanks the National Park Service and the foundation that takes such great care of our national parks and the 1300 students around the country who created the ornaments that decorate the trees representing our states and our territories and a special thanks tonight shows l l Cool, J. I'll tell you what man he looks like he can still play and I'm not talking about instruments, I'm talking about football or something. It managed anyway. I'll tell you what but Tonight's world renowned performers were just wonderful to sit there and listen to you and hear you and and watch you. Over the course of the past 99 years, presidents have continued this great American tradition of lighting the National Christmas tree through war and peace struggling progress. You know, for the evergreen tree reminds us that even in the coldest, darkest days of winter that life and abundance will return. It's a bright beacon of hope. That reminds us of the promise we find in scripture of finding light in darkness, which is also a very american thing to do. Perhaps the most american of things to find light. And it's important to continue traditions like this one, to remember that simple truth today for all those lost during the pandemic. We have also seen how much there is the game, the appreciation and gratitude of the gift of time and the light of goodwill that we share as we look out for one another. Jill and I are especially grateful to our service members and their families and for their sacrifices to our nation. We also, we also keep in our hearts, those who lost loved ones because of this virus or any other cruel twist of fate or accident. We pray for them to find strength from sorrow, purpose from pain And uh as we look out across the country with the promise of a new year ahead. We know this. We are a great nation because of you, the american people, You are good people and because of you we will never be more optimistic about the future. You've made me so optimistic. I can't I tell you what we're so much ahead of us as we enter the holiday season and my catholic faith I think there's a prayer tribute to saint Francis. He says where there is hatred let there be so love where there is discord union where there is doubt faith and where there is darkness, light and that's what we do. That's who we are. That's what the United States of America is all about. So merry christmas America May God bless you all and may God protect our troops. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah. Never. Mhm. Mhm. When we return we close out this great night of holiday magic with one american classic as performed by another american classic. The one and only billy porter at the national christmas tree lighting right here on cbs
