RAPID CITY, S.D. — It was a day of seasons greetings for the Holiday Chess Nut Tournament for younger chess players in Rapid City.
Held at the Canyon Lake Activity Center where the tournament made it’s move in coming back this year with about 20 Black Hills area students grades K-12 participating.
The tournament was hosted by the Rapid City Scholastic Chess Club where Nathan Walstrom, a former member and director of the tournament, stressed that the experience goes beyond the game for the players.
“Thinking about their moves and kind of focusing in on the the strategy of it and knowing what their moves are gonna cause like a reaction. From the opponent. And so I think that that applies to a lot of different aspects of life and being able to think ahead is always a good thing,” said Nathan.
The Chess Club meets on Mondays at the Rapid City Public Library from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
