WAKEFIELD, Neb. (KTIV) - Organizers say all of the candidates invited to Sunday’s forum were “conservative” Republicans. But, that meant candidates had to work harder to differentiate themselves in a crowded Republican field. Four candidates for Nebraska governor say “policies” set them apart.
Here’s what each candidate said at the podium or when asked about their biggest policy difference from their colleagues.
“The biggest thing for me because it’s a priority of mine would be constitutional rights. It’s restoring it’s enhancing and protecting constitutional rights. Unfortunately, I find that I’m often alone and speaking about constitutional rights, the importance and under fully understanding how they apply in our country and what our country was founded upon,” said Breland Ridenour, a candidate for governor.
Ridenour works in tech and is a devout Christian.
“Charles is looking to put together a consumption-based tax system, similar to what they do in South Dakota, North Carolina and other states. We need to do something to make Nebraska more competitive,” said Rod Edwards, Herbster For Governor Deputy Campaign Manager.
Charles Herbster is the Nebraska gubernatorial candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
“The very people in this room who are responsible for 80% of our economy, sending most of their money to the eastern part of the state. We need to make sure it’s a tax system that can carry us through for many years to come and does not end up getting outbalanced like the one we have now,” said Theresa Thibodeau, a candidate for governor.
Thibodeau is a former teacher and a former member of the Nebraska Unicameral.
“(What has stood) out is the experience to hit the ground running. You know, I’ve been through the process. I know how to get stuff done and we’re gonna have an opportunity in Nebraska. This is going to go down to May 10. Who do you like as governor? Well, he the odds on favorite to win in November,” said Brett Lindstrom, a candidate for governor.
Lindstrom is a longtime Nebraska center entering his eighth year in the Unicameral.
Every candidate acknowledged that on-the-ground meetings remain an important campaign tool, despite the pandemic. The forum also included candidates for attorney general, the public service commission and state school board.
The event drew Republicans from Cedar, Dakota, Dixon and Wayne Counties.
