As it approaches a milestone birthday, the New Jersey Symphony changed its name a few months ago. And now we find it hanging out in hipster Brooklyn. What’s next, a Porsche?
No, the Garden State orchestra is not having a mid-life crisis. The band will celebrate its centenary next season, but instead of suffering through an identity crisis, the New Jersey Symphony is currently enjoying a sort of confirmation of their mission statement. Two defining characteristics of the orchestra are that it performs all over the state instead of in one venue, as well as its long commitment to engaging minority and female conductors and music directors. These traits may not have always been seen as strengths in the formal, often rigid, classical music world; but in 2022, this flexibility and diversity is serving it quite well.
