Jefferson City, Mo. (KY3) - Thousands gathered at the Missouri Capitol to advocate for stricter abortion laws and pro-life measures in Missouri.

The group started the rally around 10 a.m. The rally featured many speakers, including a young pro-life activist, executive director of Pro-Life, and a Missouri State Representative.

Hope Miller is a teenage pro-life activist. She came from Chicago to speak and participate in the rally.

“I hope that people can truly understand the beauty and dignity of all human life. There’s a lot of lack of respect among my generation,” said Miller.

She said she has her passion for fighting from her grandfather, who passed.

" I was scheduled to speak with him on a Saturday, and he passed away the Monday before. So, unfortunately, we’re able to speak together for my first public no time. So, that just gave me a new passion. So I already had this passion for the unborn, but with his passing had this new passion for making him proud, first and foremost, and for carrying on his legacy,” said Miller.

The rally comes as there are multiple bills in the Missouri House & Missouri Senate dealing with abortion, planned parenthood, and birth control.

Representative Emily Weber is a Democrat from Kansas City. She says she’s a big supporter of Planned Parenthood.

”They helped me with my birth control for many years. The biggest one was I had pre-cancer cells in my cervix. And I was fortunate to have health care during that time when I needed the surgeries that I had to go through to make sure that those pre-cancer cells were removed, but during that time, too, you had to get checkups, I think it was every three months,” said Rep. Weber.

She says she was able to use Planned Parenthood even for those checkups after her surgery. She says she hopes people will be able to have conversations about reproductive health.

“I do hope that they realized at some point that we weren’t talking about pro-birth here. We’re not talking about pro-life. We’re talking about pro-birth, which are two completely different things. I hope they can sit down and have a conversation about what reproductive health care really looks like,” said Weber.

There is one abortion facility left in Missouri. In 2021, that facility performed 48 abortions.
