CASPER, Wyo. — The vandalized Wellspring Health Access clinic on 2nd Street in Casper was a magnate for both pro-choice and pro-life protesters on Thursday following a Wyoming Ninth District Court ruling on Wednesday that issued a temporary restraining order blocking Wyoming’s abortion ban from taking effect.

According to WyoFile, the order came after attorneys for two people suing the state told the judge that Wyoming’s abortion ban, which was set to go into effect today, violated the Wyoming Constitution, which guarantees individuals the right to make their own healthcare decisions.

Tensions were at times raised as a few members of each group traded insults and tussled to get their signs in front of each other. Mostly it was peaceful, with each side falling into its own group as cars honked or revved engines.

Activist and politician Jane Ifland, who helped organize the pro-choice protesters, said she felt a combination of “joy and relief” after yesterday’s court order. Ifland is also an advisor on the Wellspring Clinic board.

Among the pro-choice protesters was Riata Walker, who attended with her 19-month-old son, Philip.

“So this is a very personal issue for me and my family,” she said.

“My husband and I had to choose to terminate our first pregnancy for medical reasons — our daughter that we desperately wanted.”

Riata said her daughter, Riana, was diagnosed with severe heart defects and chromosomal issues.

“We had to induce labor early and have her at 22 weeks, which was a heartbreaking decision to make, but it was the best decision for our daughter and for our family,” she said.

Riata said the issue is difficult to discuss, but believes there are many reasons why a woman might choose to terminate a pregnancy, and should have that right.

“It’s a private medical decision between a woman and her doctor,” she said.

Bob Brechtel, a former Wyoming lawmaker and activist, arrived with others in the pro-life movement and often sat quietly alongside pro-choice protesters.

“We stand for the dignity of human life,” he said.

“Our purpose is, we just want to be here as long as there’s any threat of there being an opening of a surgical center for abortions, and we don’t believe that’s really a good fit for this community,” he said.
