Mavericks star Luka Doncic will be available for Tuesday’s game against the Houston Rockets after an MRI revealed his injured left thumb was only a low-grade strain, according to coach Jason Kidd at Mavericks practice on Monday. Rookie center Dereck Lively, recovering from a lower back injury, is questionable.
Doncic injured his left thumb against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, needing to get it checked in the locker room and wrapped before returning to play. He finished the game, although since the Mavericks lost by double-digits, he wasn’t needed for his usual minutes allotment.
After an MRI and practice session on Monday, Kidd said Doncic wouldn’t miss any time. Lively, who injured his back after a scary fall against the Lakers on Wednesday, practiced on Monday but Kidd still said he’d be questionable for Tuesday. Lively missed Saturday’s game against the Clippers and the rookie’s presence was sorely missed.
The NBA schedule has given the Mavericks a break — the team had two days off after Lively’s injury against the Lakers, has two days off between the Clippers and Rockets games, and then will have another two days off again before playing Friday at home against the Grizzlies. The Mavericks have the ability to not rush Lively back and not have him miss many games. If Lively sits against Houston, but returns against Memphis, he’ll have only missed two games despite getting eight days of recovery.
