Thousands of firefighters, friends and members of the public gathered at Navy Pier Monday to honor Chicago Fire Department firefighter Andrew Price, who was killed last week while battling a fire in Lincoln Park.
Price’s family greeted visitors for over an hour before the funeral service, set to begin at noon. Two members of the fire department’s honor guard stood in front of his remains in the ballroom, as firefighters, police and paramedics saluted. His on-duty Truck 44 helmet was placed on a table next to his official department portrait. The line to pay respect snaked to the back of the ballroom, and visitors waited patiently as the line inched forward.
Known as “Drew” to his family, Price, 39, died last week after succumbing to “significant injuries” suffered while battling a blaze in Lincoln Park. Price fell through a shaft on the roof of a four-story building, at 2430-2432 N. Lincoln Ave., which contains the Lincoln Station restaurant on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors.
He was described by colleagues as “loved by so many” and a “light of sunshine.” Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, who knew him personally, said he was a “health nut” and exercised frequently.
“Keep the Chicago Fire Department in your prayers and his family especially as they realized what so many other families have this year, that this job is a very, very, very dangerous job and we go to work and we never know who will come home,” she said last week after his death.
A private visitation on Monday morning preceded the funeral at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom. A public visitation began at 10 a.m., with a fire department walk-through later in the morning.
A televised public service is scheduled to start at noon.

Price joined the Fire Department in 2009 and was an instructor at the academy. He was the fourth firefighter to die in the line of duty in Chicago this year.
Price’s sister-in-law, Vanessa Mohr, started a GoFundMe to support his family, which has raised nearly $75,000. She wrote that Price was a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, who embodied a “just chill life, always encouraging others to appreciate the little things.”
“He taught us to love harder, act kinder, and search for joy in every moment,” she wrote.
