More than 200 people gathered Monday evening outside the police union office in North Portland.
As of 7:50 p.m., at least two dozen police officers in riot gear surrounded the one-story building near North Lombard Street and Campbell Avenue as the crowd chanted “George Floyd” and “Quit your job” from across the street. At least one protester was detained by officers. Police ordered the crowd to stay out of the street and not block traffic.
Hundreds of people remained in the westbound lanes of Lombard Street by 8:30 p.m. Two eastbound lanes separated protesters and police. Cars drove between the two groups, honking as they made their way past.
By 8:45 p.m., protesters filled all of Lombard and stood feet away from officers. Portland police again ordered people to leave the street, saying demonstrators gathered in the street had “threatened physical violence” toward officers. A line of officers pressed the crowd toward the sidewalk across the street from the police union building. Officers then backed away, and demonstrators filed back into the street.
Around 9 p.m., officers again pressed the crowd back toward the sidewalk. Some officers used batons to force people to move. At least one person was detained.
The crowd eventually moved back into Lombard and remained there past 9:30 p.m. Together, they chanted, “Dominique Dunn!” Dunn was killed Thursday in a shooting outside a Southwest Portland strip club. His family believes the shooting was racially motivated, although police have said they found no evidence of that.
The crowd also chanted the names of Black men killed by Portland police, including Keaton Otis and Patrick Kimmons.
The Portland Police Association headquarters sits in a business and residential area of Lombard Street and was the site of a June 30 clash between police and protesters that led officers using tear gas. Drivers, passersby and residents in their home along a mile-long stretch of the roadway were caught in the fray.
The demonstration is the latest in seven weeks of Portland protests of police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minnesota on May 25. In the weeks since, nightly protests have largely remained downtown near the jail and federal courthouse.
